Samsung C&T, the construction division of South Korea’s largest conglomerate, is to build the $310m Star Development in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. The contract was awarded to it by Alpine Return, a joint venture between Malaysian property developers UMLand and Symphony Life.Â
Samsung will build three residential high-rises: two will fit 58 storeys into 265m, and the third will be one storey shorter. Once complete, these structures will be among the tallest residential towers in Kuala Lumpur. Â
Alongside them will be the Star Boulevard, a retail and entertainment centre. The main draw here is a Malaysian version of Hollywood Boulevard’s “Walk of Fame”, which is where tourist go to see the handprints of actors outside the Chinese Theatre. This version will stretch for 200m and will memorialise local and international celebrities.Â
Chi Hun Choi, the president and chief executive of Samsung C&T, said: “We look forward to continuing our support for Malaysia’s growth and development, having participated in large-scale projects including the Petronas Twin Towers.Â
“Though challenging, we are certain that by working closely with our trusted partners and maintaining a strong emphasis on safety, the project will be successful.”Â
Samsung C&T has considerable experience with challenging projects, having built the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, presently the tallest building the in the world.Â
Construction work has begun and is expected to be completed by 2019.
