Danish engineer Ramboll is to spearhead an anti-flooding project in Copenhagen that will involve building basins and conduits to store excess rainwater in a city centre lake.
The project will involve the digging of catchment areas in the Hans Tavsens Park and the Nørrebro district in the north of the city.
On its way to Peblinge Lake, the flood water will be biologically purified.
Christian Nyerup Nielsen, the head of Ramboll’s flood management arm, said: "The project will be an international beacon for climate adaptation in cities, since it brings together the right technical and social aspects. Â
"At the same time it provides an innovative solution by focusing on improving the water quality in the lake."
Work on the $21m "Soul of Nørrebro" development is due to start in 2019.
The park basins will be able to hold 18,000 cubic metres of water when completed in 2022.
Ramboll will be collaborating with local landscape architect SLA.
The project team also includes Danish firms ArkiLab, "GAME", Social Action and author and sociologist Aydin Soei.
