Poland is planning to build a nuclear power plant in Pomerania, in the north west of the country, energy minister Krzysztof Tchórzewski told Polish Radio this week.
The work will be carried out by PGE EJ1, a specially created subsidiary of state-owned energy group Polska Grupa Energetyczna, and aims to be complete by 2033.
Tchórzewski said: "Locations in the north western coastal region of Poland have been chosen. The communities living there have been preparing themselves for the construction, they visited nuclear power plants abroad, thus, in a manner of speaking, we have received social consent to start building."
In April 2017, PGE EJ1 began carrying out "localisation and environmental studies" in Choczewo, Krokowa and Gniewino, which are towns in Pomerania Province.
Poland’s nuclear power programme, which was approved in 2014, originally envisaged two nuclear power plants with 6GW of capacity, with the first one commissioned in 2022 – a schedule that has since been delayed.
