Norwegian architecture firm Nordic Office of Architecture in partnership with UK-based Grimshaw has won a contract to design what will be the largest airport in Istanbul, and the world.
Nordic Office of Architecture and Grimshaw, together with UK firms Haptic Architects and Arup Associates, have been appointed by the Turkish consortium of Cengiz, Mapa, Limak, Kolin and Kalyon to design the terminal complex for the Istanbul New Airport.
Principal partner of Nordic, Gudmund Stokke said: "We are glad to be able to respond to the high demands of the client and create an exceptional solution, both in terms of functionality and architecture".
Based on the Black Sea coast, 35km from Istanbul, the six-runway development will be delivered in four phases. The first phase will open in 2019 and aims to serve 90 million passengers per year. This will increase to over 150 million passengers per year when the last phase is completed.
Once complete, the new Istanbul airport will be the world’s largest with a gross floor area close to one million square metres for the first terminal.
