Mott MacDonald and Arcadis win mammoth Sydney metro contract

A joint venture between multidisciplinary engineers Arcadis and Mott MacDonald has been named the lead designers for Sydney’s Underground Station Design and Technical Services (USDTS) contract.

The Anglo-Dutch team will tackle 31 stations and 66km of metro rail for the second phase of the Sydney Metro; this will extend the system for 30km under Sydney Harbour and through the centre of the city.

Sydney Metro City & Southwest is presently the largest public sector transport project in Australia, with a value of about US$9.4bn.

Arcadis and Mott MacDonald are part of the Metron design consortium, which also includes Foster + Partners, and Australian consultants Architectus and Robert Bird Group.

Greg Steele, chief executive of Arcadis Australia Pacific, said: "Sydney Metro will be one of the most transformational projects in New South Wales since the Sydney Harbour Bridge and we are very excited to bring our combination of global experience and Australian depth of knowledge to the project."

Arcadis is an Amsterdam-based global consultancy with around $3.6bn in revenues. Croydon-based Mott MacDonald has turnover of $2bn.
