The Malaysian government agency responsible for construction has so far shut eight building sites down for not complying with Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).
The action by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) followed a nationwide inspection between 20 April and 2 June.
Investigating just over 6,300 sites, the CIDB found around 1,400 had resumed work, of which 1,118 were complying with procedures.
Warnings were issued to 272 sites, and eight were ordered to close.
"Among the SOP is to ensure that all their foreign workers undergo the Covid-19 screenings and tests, and confirmed free of the disease before returning to work," said senior minister for infrastructure, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, reports The Malay Mail.Â
"Compliance with the SOP has been seen as successful in detecting positive cases among the construction workers before they return to work. It also allows them and their close contacts to be quarantined to prevent further spread of the disease," he said.
He said all workers should also have their body temperature checked and recorded daily before entering sites, with symptoms reported to the nearest health office.
