Mace, Dragados, Balfour Beatty and Vinci win $3bn HS2 station contracts

Teams led by Mace/Dragados and Balfour Beatty/Vinci have won the race to build London’s HS2 stations at Euston and Old Oak Common, both of which are worth around $1.5bn.

Mace and Dragados beat joint ventures between Costain and Skanska and Bam Nuttall and Ferrovial to the Euston scheme. This project, designed by local architect Grimshaw, will more than double the station’s capacity.

Balfour Beatty, Vinci and French consultant Systra will tackle Old Oak Common, a new station that will provide an interchange between HS2 and Crossrail. This project was originally contested by a Laing O’Rourke-led team and another from Bechtel, although both subsequently withdrew.

Mark Thurston, the chief executive of HS2, said: “Euston and Old Oak Common are two landmark stations that will help unlock tens of thousands of jobs and new homes across the capital. Together with our Birmingham stations, they will transform the way we travel and set new standards for design, construction and operation.”

Mace and Dragados have worked together on a number of large-scale projects in the past, including Battersea Power Station, Mumbai International Airport Terminal Two and Spain’s high speed rail network. Dragados is a subsidiary of Spanish contractor ACS.

Balfour Beatty and Vinci have collaborated on the Tours-Bordeaux TGV line, the Thames Tideway tunnel and the London 2012 Aquatics Centre.
