Jacobs picked to masterplan three smart cities in southern India

US engineer Jacobs has been selected by India’s National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) to masterplan and provide preliminary engineering design for three smart cities in the south of the country.

The three sites in Palakkad, Kerala, and Ponneri and Dharmapuri-Salem in Tamil Nadu, will transform industrial cities into manufacturing and investment destinations with new roads, railways and water, power and social infrastructure.

The smart cities aim to attract businesses that manufacture high-value export products to promote local economic and socio-economic development.

Jacobs will use data-driven generative designs, advanced visualisation techniques and smarter integration of city infrastructure in developing the clusters.

Patrick Hill, Jacobs’ executive vice president, said: "We’ve been working with NICDC in India for the past 12 years.

"These latest appointments give us the opportunity to combine that experience with the recent advances in digital and technology to set the new standard of excellence for industrial developments, to help diversify India’s economy and to deliver long-term economic growth."
