Hochtief wins $300m Qatar tunnel contract

A consortium including Hochtief, Strabag and Petroserv has been awarded a $300m contract to construct of 14.7km section of the sewerage network under Doha.

The scheme, which was awarded by the Qatari Public Works Authority, is part of an extensive refurbishment and expansion of the overloaded sewerage system in the south of the capital.

The existing system serves an area of 680 square kilometres, and is struggling to cope with the country’s rapid population growth.

The work will be carried out with two boring machines, which will create a 4.5m diameter tunnel. After the installation of the outer shell, an inner lining will be added to protect the concrete from the sewer gases by means of an HDPE membrane.

In addition to the tunnel, shafts up to 45m deep will be built, some of which will serve as connectors to other construction projects.

The firms undertaking the work are Hochtief Solutions Middle East Qatar, together with Al Sraiya Strabag and Qatari infrastructure company Petroserv.

The consortium will be responsible for the execution planning for the project, which is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of 2019.

Nikolaus Graf von Matuschka, chief executive of the Hochtief Solutions, said: "We are very happy to strengthen our presence in the Middle East through this major project."

The project will have a design life of 100 years.
