Four consortiums chosen for major upgrade of Toronto’s Union Station

Four teams have been chosen to compete for an upgrade of Union Station in Toronto, one of the city’s main transport hubs and the second busiest rail station in North America, Urban Toronto reports.

The main elements of the work will be the addition of a platform and a concourse area, as well as the widening of existing platforms and the laying of new track.

It will be part of a US$600m scheme designed to revitalise the station by doubling its pedestrian capacity, restoring heritage elements, and creating a destination for shopping, dining and community gathering.

It will also relieve chronic overcrowding at the station, which recently led to a C$50,000 fine for the City of Toronto following an incident in December 2018.

The shortlisted teams were selected on the basis of their responses to a request for qualifications, issued by state transport operator Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario. They are:

  • OnTrack Alliance: with US contractors Kiewit and Alberici and WSP of Canada as designer
  • GTA Alliance: made up of Canadian contractor EllisDon and the UK’s Keltbray with design by US engineer Aecom, Canadian architect Zeidler and Stephenson Engineering of the UK
  • OneUnion Alliance: including Canadian companies Aecon, Modern Niagara and PNR RailWorks with design by UK consulting engineer Mott MacDonald and French engineer Systra
  • Union Gateway Alliance: with Dragados of Spain and design by Parson of the US and Hatch Engineering of the UK.

A winner is expected to be announced during the summer.
