US renewables company SolarCity has announced a new product line: roofs whose entire exposed surface area is made up of photovoltaic panels.
The roofs would be aimed at customers who are reluctant to install conventional panel systems because of the need to prepare roofs before installation.
The company note that the business case for the new product was supported by the fact that five million roofs are replaced each year in America.
There is no information on when roofs will be available, or what they will cost, however the Engadget website suggests that the designs will be customisable to suit individual homes.
SolarCity was the subject of a $2.6bn takeover by Elon Musk’s Tesla in June. The idea was to create “the world’s only vertically integrated sustainable energy company”.
The firms have suggested that the merger will “create fully integrated residential, commercial and grid-scale products that improve the way that energy is generated, stored and consumed”.
Last year, SolarCity unveiled the “world’s most efficient rooftop solar panel”.

It is the only sensible thing to do to make renewable energy an attractive and an affordable choice and to reduce environmental pollution as far as possible globally! In addition any and all legal impediments which seek to monopolise energy generation and drive up the cost of individual procurement should be done away with! On the contrary all property owners should be encouraged in every possible way to install any such suitable systems available and affordable to enhance the viability of their property! However ,those supplying and installing them, should fully guide such owner as to the specific installation, working and usage requirements to be followed to achieve the maximum benefits for their property and its occupants !
