The third-last section of the deck for Genoa’s new bridge was installed Friday by Salini Impregilo (Webuild) and Fincantieri, bringing to more than 960m out of 1,067m of the structure’s total finished length.
The Renzo Piano-designed bridge will replace the Morandi Bridge over the Polcevera River valley, which collapsed in August 2018, killing 43 people.
Remaining to be installed are two sections of 50m each, which are expected to be installed by the end of April, Salini said.
The latest span, weighing 215 tonnes, was hoisted by crane to a height of 40m between Piers 17 and 18 between two sections previously installed.

Work is also underway to install the final fixtures of the bridge, which include data collection, power generation, and automatic monitoring of the bridge’s condition.
Once all spans are installed, the deck will be lowered 26cm onto its permanent bearings and the base of the deck will be covered with concrete to prepare for the road surface.
Salini said “extraordinary measures” are being taken to keep workers from contracting Covid-19.
- This video shows how they have approached the bridge’s construction:
Â
They include taking the temperature of every worker who enters the site, distributing masks and hand sanitisers, enforcing the safe distance rule, disinfecting work sites and common areas, and reducing the number of people who travel in the same vehicle to and from the site.
While it is being built, the bridge is lit up every evening with three lasers beaming the colours of the Italian flag to express solidarity with the country send a message of hope for Genoa’s future.
