A Chinese property developer is lobbying officials in Sydney, Australia for a major development near Sydney’s planned international airport on land owned by a man being tried for murder.
Boyuan Holdings Limited (BHL) wants the government of New South Wales to accept its ambitious masterplan, which would require the realignment of a proposed motorway and moving a railway underground.
In a cover letter to its masterplan submission, BHL’s chief executive Caden Wan insisted that it was "critically important that documents be adopted as government policy as soon as possible", reports Australia’s Channel 9 News.
The land, which is located north of Elizabeth Drive at Badgery’s Creek, is owned by Ron Medich, 69, who is presently being tried for the murder of his former business partner.
The details of the arrangement between BHL and Roy Medich are "confidential", according to BHL.
BHL’s idea for a "Northern Gateway" envisages a mix of commercial, industrial and residential developments around the airport, which is due to be completed in 2026. The total area would be 344ha, of which some 88ha would be used to build homes for 22,250 people.
The scheme would require the realignment of the proposed M12 motorway and changing the overground North-South rail line into an underground metro with a station on its land.
BHL completed a 120,000-sq-m mixed-used project in Jiaxing City in eastern China in 2016, and has six projects under way in Australia, including the Austral Green housing scheme (pictured), which will be located about a kilometre southeast of the proposed Northern Gateway.
According to Channel 9 News, BHL’s was one of a number of proposals lodged in December with the Greater Sydney Commission’s Western Sydney District Plan, Greater Sydney Region Plan 2056 and Future Transport Plan 2056.
Western Sydney University and shopping mall owner Scentre Group are named as BHL’s "anchor partners", and seven Chinese companies have indicated an interest in partnering in the project, including China Communications Construction Company, which owns Australian contractor John Holland.
