CH2M and Fluor awarded $1.5bn nuclear contract in Kentucky

The US Department of Energy has awarded a contract to decommission a site used to make nuclear weapons to a domestic consortium led by CH2M, Fluor and power generation company BWX Technologies.

The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant

The Four Rivers Nuclear Partnership will clean up the 3,500 acre Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in western Kentucky. The site was built in the 1950s to create enriched uranium for bombs and reactors, a job it carried out until 2013.

The contract involves the management of more than 650 structures, properties and buildings with the aim of reducing risk and future demolition costs.

The performance-based contract, which will begin in the next few weeks, is valued at approximately $1.5bn over 10 years.
