Carillion Alawi, the middle-eastern arm of UK construction and support services firm Carillion, has been appointed to construct the $200m second phase of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre Precinct.
An 18-month contract due to start in July 2013 was awarded to Carillion by Omran, an organisation set up by Oman’s government to deliver major projects in the tourism sector, reports TradeArabia.
Carillion will construct 13 buildings including exhibition halls, car park facilities and a district cooling plant and will also deliver mechanical, electrical and plumbing installation, all interior finishes and landscaping.
The precinct will be enclosed entirely by nature, according to CEO Wael al Lawati, quoted in a report in the Oman Daily Observer: "A business park, retail shopping mall surrounded by a nature reserve which will be a haven for Oman’s exotic birdlife, parklands and wadi (valley) park are also part of this picturesque precinct."
The Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre Project
The precinct is part of a larger venture called the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre Project, located 4km from Muscat International Airport.
Contracts for other components of this project, such as the business district, hotel and residential area and banquet halls, are expected to come to market between now and the end of 2014.
With an estimated total construction value of around $1.5bn, the whole project should be completed by late 2016.
Carillion, according to its website, has an annual revenue of nearly $8bn, and employs around 45,000 people across the UK, the Middle East and Canada.
