British construction worker dies at Qatar’s Khalifa stadium

A British construction worker has died while working on a 2022 World Cup stadium in Qatar. The cause of death has not been given, although it is understood he was working for a German subcontractor.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, which is organising the tournament, released a statement on its website today.

It said: “A 40-year-old British male lost his life working on Khalifa International Stadium. The relevant authorities have been notified and the next of kin have been informed. An immediate investigation into the cause of this fatality is under way and further details will be released in due course.

“The Supreme Committee shares our deepest condolences with the family for their loss.”

The 40,000 seat stadium, also known as the National Stadium, is to host the quarter finals of the tournament. The ground was originally built in 1976, and is being refurbished to bring it up to Fifa standards.

Loss of life among construction workers at Qatari World Cup venues has been a source of concern over the past three years, along with migrants’ lack of legal rights.

Qatar has announced the death of four stadium workers, with one fatality the result of a work-related accident, but it insists that it has a good record for worker safety.
