Bouygues and Vinci win $300m Cairo metro extension

The Egyptian authorities have awarded a joint venture led by Vinci Construction and Bouygues Travaux Publics, a Bouygues subsidiary, a $295m contract for a new phase of civil engineering for Line 3 of the Cairo metro.

Bouygues and Vinci will work with Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors.

The extension will run between Haroun station in southern Cairo and El Nozha station in the city centre.

The new tranche of works, phase 4A of the overall plan, continues from Phase 2, which was brought into service in May 2014, more than six months ahead of schedule.

Phase 4A consists of 5.2km of tunnel and five underground stations on Line 3, the east-west link across the Egyptian capital.

The joint venture has committed itself to a short design, build and delivery deadline of 34 months.

For this part of the work, an earth pressure balance boring machine, used for the previous phase, will be modified to operate as a slurry pressure balance machine. This change will generate time and cost savings for the joint venture.

The project will employ around 3,200 people, mostly Egyptian.
