Shenzhen Kingkey Group, a privately owned Chinese developer, has announced plans to build a 739m-high tower in its home city as part of a cluster of supertall buildings.
The proposed tower, which has not yet been given a name or an architect, would be built in the financial centre of the Luohu district, which is Shenzhen’s gateway to Hong Kong.
If it goes ahead, it would be neighbours with Kingkey’s other supertall project, the 442m KK100, presently the 15th tallest building in the world, the sixth tallest in mainland China and the first tallest to be designed by a UK architect (Farrells). Â
In global terms, the building would probably be the third tallest in the world when it is finished, after the 830m Burj al-Khalifa in Dubai and the 1,008m Jeddah Tower on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, which is due to be completed by 2020.
It is likely to be the highest in China, however, beating the 632m Shanghai Tower, which topped out in 2013, and the 729m Suzhou Zhongnan Centre, under construction near Shanghai, and the 636m Wuhan Greenland Centre.
Shenzhen is a city of more than 10 million people located just north of Hong Kong in the Pearl River delta. The Financial Times reported last year that the property prices in the city, which has the highest productivity in China, had risen 30% in 12 months.
