Google has announced plans for a 1 million sq ft campus in Sunnyvale, California, designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).
Located in the Moffett Park district, the development will accommodate 4,500 employees in an area where the company has bought $1bn of property since 2016.
Two "sibling" offices will be located on top of hillsides covered with winding, terraced tracks. The inclines are designed to encourage employees to walk, cycle or roller blade to and from work.
Mark Golan, chief operating officer of Google’s real estate arm, said: "Housing is part of our thought process in Moffett Park, a mixed-use community where you have live-work capabilities.
"Housing and transportation are two huge issues for the Valley overall, and they are huge issues for Google. One of the best ways to address this is by creating mixed-use communities that allow people to live close to where they work, which allows for a vibrant community and also helps the transportation."
Work on the project is not due to be completed until 2021 at the earliest. The project will be near to the Googleplex in Mountain View, designed by BIG and Heatherwick Studio, and slated for completion in 2019.
