Two engineers, California-based Jacobs and Aurecon of South Africa, have won a contract to build a section of a multi-billion dollar urban motorway in Sydney.
The New M5 scheme is the largest section let so far of the WestConnex project, which is intended to improve traffic flow through the city.
It is being delivered by CPB Contractors, a consortium led by Spain’s Dragados and Korea’s Samsung.
The Jacobs and Aurecon joint venture is to provide multidisciplinary engineering design services. Â
The New M5 is intended to double the capacity of the congested M5 East motorway corridor, providing twin tunnels 9km long between the districts of Kingsgrove and St Peters.
The project, which is billed as the largest infrastructure scheme in Australia, aims to "reduce the congestion affecting hundreds of thousands of New South Wales road users every day".
A core team of 75 staff from Jacobs had already been selected for the project.
To assist with the coordination and integration of design with other parties, BIM systems are being used to design and document elements of the project.
