A 225m high luffing crane is to be used to erect the Commercial Bay development on the waterfront of Auckland, New Zealand.
The NZ$2.2m ($1.6m) Liebherr 357 is due to arrive on site in the next few weeks from Biberach, Germany.
We couldn’t get much higher: One of Swiss company Liebherr’s 356 (Liebherr)
When it reaches it maximum height, towards the end of the project, it will be almost a quarter of a kilometre tall, and able to lift 32,000kg – equivalent to six elephants.
The same Liebherr model is also being used to build the 1-km-high Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The New Zealand project is being built by Auckland contractor Fletcher, and is being developed by local real estate company Precinct.
Scott Pritchard, the company’s chief executive, said in a statement: "We believe Commercial Bay is the most transformational project Auckland’s central business district has ever seen." He added that the retail would have around 100 shops and the office building, which will be named the Price Waterhouse Cooper tower, would be a "world-class working environment".
