Amazon opens supermarket, announces finalists for second HQ

American e-commerce giant Amazon has selected 20 finalists for the company’s second headquarters in North America.

Amazon says its headquarters will create 50,000 full-time high-paying jobs, tens of thousands of additional jobs in construction and it is planning to invest $5bn in the chosen city.

The firm says HQ2 will be a full equal to its Seattle HQ, not a satellite office. It whittled down the 20 finalists from 238 submissions.

The 20 selected candidates are:

  • Atlanta, GA
  • Austin, TX
  • Boston, MA
  • Chicago, IL
  • Columbus, OH
  • Dallas, TX
  • Denver, CO
  • Indianapolis, IN
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • Miami, FL
  • Montgomery County, MD
  • Nashville, TN
  • Newark, NJ
  • New York City, NY
  • Northern Virginia, VA
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • Raleigh, NC
  • Toronto, ON
  • Washington D.C.

Amazon will choose the winning city later this year.

The firm has also opened a supermarket in Seattle called Amazon Go.

The 167 sq m shop does not contain any checkouts, with customers entering the shop by scanning an Amazon app.

The supermarket contains technology which automatically detects when products are taken or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart.

After leaving with your items, Amazon will send you a receipt and charge your account.

The supermarket will contain Amazon Meal Kits, containing all the ingredients you need to make a meal in about half an hour.

In 2016, Amazon announced plans to open 400 bookshops.
