US-based infrastructure firm Aecom has won a contract to provide detailed design consultancy for the new passenger building at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), part of the $18.2bn (HK$141.5bn) Three-runway System (3RS) expansion project.
The building, to be sited on a 650-hectare manmade island built to accommodate HKIA’s third runway (pictured), will handle 30 million passengers a year when opened in 2024.
With a floor area of 280,000 square metres, the building will offer visitors “a relaxed environmental experience that will be one of the world’s greenest airports when it is completed”, Aecom said.
Features include a courtyard at the centre of the building with lush landscaping, and extensive use of natural light.
Sean Chiao, president of Aecom Asia Pacific, said: “We look forward to leveraging our connected expertise to deliver designs for this major project as well as the airport’s Terminal 2 Expansion for which we were awarded consultancy work earlier.”
Building the third runway involves reclaiming approximately 650 hectares of land north of the existing airport island. The new land will be bounded by approximately 13.4km of seawall. Non-dredge methods, including deep cement mixing technique will be used for reclamation, according to HKIA.
Paul Sankey, vice president, aviation, Aecom Hong Kong, said: “Many of the team members have hands-on experience of past and current projects with Hong Kong International Airport. They will bring technical excellence and knowledge of airport design and engineering to ensure cost-effectiveness and on-schedule implementation through the provision of ‘buildable’ design.”
The Third Runway Passenger Building, in its primary phase, will have 57 aircraft parking positions and will be able to handle 30 million passengers each year together with the modified Terminal 2.
Work on 3RS started in August and construction is expected to be completed in 2024.
British firms Atkins and Mott MacDonald are also working on the airport extension.
