New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have said a swimming pool that floats in and filters the city’s waters will be tested in the East River at Pier 35 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

The city and state will jointly fund a water filtration pilot for the so-called “+ Pool” there during August.

“New York City’s waterways are some of our most important assets. By exploring the possibility of a + Pool, we are … expanding equitable access to swimming for all New Yorkers, especially our children,” said Mayor Adams.

The idea of + Pool was first mooted in 2021.

In January 2024, Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul said the city and state would jointly fund the first round of demonstration projects to test the concept.

New York State will contribute $12m to testing the project, with the city chipping in $4m.

For the 2021 concept, Arup worked on + Pool’s structure, mechanics and filtration systems, One Nature acted as the ecological consultant, and McLaren Engineering was the marine engineer.
