Dutch architect MVRDV has won a design competition for a 300 sq m art installation and 5km of landscaped pathways in Den Helder, a municipality at the northernmost tip of the Netherlands.
MVRDV says the "SeaSaw" represents the "connection between city and sea" literally as it undulates with the water’s movement, while offering a view of the Marsdiep Strait and the North and Wadden Sea.
In addition to the installation, a 5km walking, cycling and hiking route will be built, with the aim of regenerating the seafront. A winding pathway in the form of the infinity symbol will lead visitors around the dike.
MVRDV was selected as project winners by Zeestad, an independent organisation in partnership with the municipality of Den Helder, with the aim of creating "a new symbol for the city to help it develop a sense of identity".
The project is due to be completed in 2019.
