A team comprising Dutch architect Mecanoo, Lola Landscape, and China’s Meng Architects has won a competition to masterplan a 1.2-sq-km “Scientists Valley” on a patch of land in the north of the Chinese city of Shenzhen.
The client – Shenzhen Guangming Science City Development Investment Company – wants to create a research and innovation hub that will attract scientific talent from around the world.
Mecanoo’s team came up with a plan for a forested valley between two existing reservoirs north of Shenzhen’s Guangming district.
The architect notes that it would be the first comprehensive national science centre in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area megalopolis.
The concept includes a “Valley of Coexistence”, which Mecanoo said is meant to “foster collaboration between the public and scientists, nurturing the growth of the forest and promoting coexistence within the valley”.
