Dutch architect Mecanoo has won a competition to redesign Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which contains art dating back to the medieval period, as well as works by DalÃ, Monet and Van Gogh.
Mecanoo has designed a wing of the museum, following in the footsteps of Van der Steur in 1935, and Bodon in 1972.

Mecanoo will also redesign the layout of the museum, which it says has become a “maze”, following previous. It aims to reconfigure the rooms to improve visitor flow, and will also add an entrance to the Museumpark.

The design will add a double-height exhibition space called the Park Pavilion in the museum garden, complete with restaurant.

The redesigned museum is due to open in autumn 2021.
