The Saudi Arabian government is planning to adapt part of Jeddah’s historic Al-Balad district into a 370ha development containing 9,300 residential units, 1,800 hotel rooms and 1.3 million sq m of commercial and office space.

The news was announced by state’s Public Investment Fund, which has established the Al Balad Development Company to front the project. According to the company, the Unesco World Heritage site will be preserved, as will environmental sustainability.

The project aims to encourage tourism and international investment, and is close to similar efforts such as the Red Sea Project and Neom, which is due to contain The Line.

In 2021, the Saudi Government launched the Revitalise Historic Jeddah initiative, part of its Historic Jeddah Development Project.
