Mauricio Baiense, the owner and operator of Contract Framing Builders (CFB), a Massachusetts construction company, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for tax fraud and lying under oath about a fatality at a worksite.

Baiense, 57, was found to have made a false statement during an Occupational Safety and Health Administration hearing, claiming a deceased employee did not work for him.

It was also found that, between 2013 and 2017, he paid $11m to subcontractors who were in fact employees.

He also evaded employment taxes by paying staff in cash, and aided at least one employee to make a fraudulent employment tax return.

In addition to the sentence, Massachusetts district judge William Young ordered Baiense to serve three years of supervised release and pay $2.8m in restitution.
