The owner of two construction companies in Massachusetts has been sentenced to 18 months in prison and three years of supervision after being found guilty of tax and mail fraud.

Dariusz Pietron, 51, is the owner of TJM Construction and Point Construction. He was found guilty of three counts of failure to collect and pay employment taxes to the IRS and one count of mail fraud relating to underpaid workers’ compensation insurance premiums.

Pietron recruited two employees to create three shell companies, which then acted as subcontractors for TJM and Point employees, allowing him to evade the payments.

In particular, Pietron failed to disclose to Travelers Insurance Company the real wages of employees, meaning that his companies paid lower insurance premiums than they should have.

He was ordered to pay $1.1m to the IRS and $244,000 to Travelers.

Victor Wild, an assistant US attorney in the financial and cyber fraud unit, prosecuted the case in a federal court in Boston.
