Maryland Governor Wes Moore and the Maryland Department of Transportation this month unveiled the design concept for the new Francis Scott Key Bridge that will replace the one knocked over by an out-of-control container ship last March, killing six construction workers.
His office said that with the new design concept, the project will move forward with final design and regulatory approvals before initiating construction.
It added that the project team would continue to gather public input on non-structural design elements so that the bridge “resonates with Marylanders”.
“Today, we take an important step toward recovering from the tragic Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse that has affected not just Maryland’s economy, but the nation’s economy,” Moore said.
“While we mark the unveiling of the new bridge design, we continue to honour the six Marylanders who lost their lives while serving our state, and their families who carry their legacy forward.”

To strengthen the Port of Baltimore’s position on the East Coast, the governor also said the state would invest $15m in Tradepoint Atlantic’s Terminal Container Project, which would increase container capacity by 70%.
Moore said the expansion would generate more than $1bn in private investment and create 8,000 new jobs.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called the new design concept “an important step in the recovery from a deep tragedy for the city, state, and country”.
