Lishui Airport in China’s eastern Zhejiang Province, designed by MAD Architects, is due to open by the end of the year.

The airport is located in Lishui’s foothills, 15km southwest of the city. It runs along a 100m contour, and has a stepped terrace layout, with terminal, parking and office spaces occupying different layers.

The 12,000 sq m terminal is covered by a silver-white aluminium roof that gives the appearance of a bird ready to take flight. This is supported by 14 umbrella-shaped columns with a 30m cantilever creating a light-filled concourse below a shuttle-shaped skylight.

The wood-lined interior transitions from 4.5m height at its lowest point to 13m at its highest. A landscaped walkway extends from the parking area into the terminal.

The 2,267ha project will handle domestic flights, with an initial capacity for 1 million passengers a year, rising to 5 million by 2050.

Ma Yansong, MAD Architect’s founder, said: “Lishui is a garden city, and her airport should also be in a garden. As a feeder airport, Lishui shows another attitude as a public transportation facility in the city: not greedy for big, but pursuing convenience and humanity, and pursuing a dialogue with the natural environment.”
