Ferrovial and Acciona have won a contract to bury a 620m stretch of Madrid’s M-30 ring road to give people access to the left bank of the Manzanares River.
Part of the city’s long-running and comprehensive ‘Madrid RÃo’ beautification plan, the project will create a park with the construction of a cut-and-cover tunnel for cars on the length of the M-30 that used to wrap around part of the Vicente Calderón stadium, travelling under the stadium’s elevated west stand (pictured).
The stadium, formerly home to Atlético MadrÃd football team, is no longer there, having been demolished over 2019 and 2020.
Work is scheduled to start in September and be completed in 20 months, the companies said.
The stretch of road in question is the last overground segment of the M-30’s southern arc. Ferrovial was previously involved in burying other parts of the road.
Awarded by Madrid City Council, the project involves building pile-supported containment walls covered by pre-cast girders and in situ slabs.
