UK construction group Mace has been appointed by the Dubai World Trade Centre to deliver the first phase of the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) expansion at the emirate’s Expo City.
Mace will act as project and design manager for the development’s first phase, which involves increasing exhibition space from 58,000 sq m to 140,000 sq m. It is due to be completed by 2026.
The complete £2.1bn expansion has two further phases that are to be completed by 2031. This will make the DEC one of the world’s largest purpose-built indoor events and exhibitions venues, with 180,000 sq m of floor space.
The expansion is part of a plan to increase the number of large-scale events held in Dubai from 300 a year to 600 by 2033.
Amer Al Farsi, Dubai World Trade Centre’s assistant vice president of real estate, said: “We are committed to further developing Dubai’s exhibitions and events industry, with the aim of tripling its annual economic contribution to £11bn by 2033. The expansion of the DEC will play a key role in this.”
Mace worked on the original DEC project for Expo 2020 Dubai.
