Belgian dredging group Jan De Nul has been awarded a $200m contract by Dubai developer Nakheel for its sequel to the Palm Jumeirah project, De Tijd magazine reports.

Palm Jumeirah II, also known as Palm Jebel Ali, was almost complete when the 2008 financial crash occurred, and has been in limbo ever since. On Monday, Nakheel confirmed that the project will finally be restarted.

The family-owned dredging specialist will now spend two years in dredging, land reclamation, beach profiling and work to support the construction of the island’s holiday villas.

The island will have the same form as its processor, but will have nearly double the area: 13.4 sq km rather than 7 sq km.

The first eight fronds of the sixteen-frond palm tree should be ready to accommodate propositions for construction in the first quarter of 2025.

The island will have 110km of beaches and around 80 hotel and recreational complexes have been planned.

Contracts have also been awarded for the link that will connect the island to Sheikh Zayed Road, the urban motorway that runs through Dubai.

According to De Tijd, Jan De Nul declined to elaborate further on the contract. “It’s signed, but we need to discuss a bit more with the client,” the company said.

As well as Palm II, “The World” is also due to begin again. This is a collection of dozens of islands in the shape of a world map.

These islands were also reclaimed, but only a few were completed and sold. Many of the planned 300 islands will now be grouped into continents to make the job of providing infrastructure simpler.
