Italian State Railways Group engineering firm, Italferr, has beaten German and Omani bids to win a design contract for Oman’s national railway project valued at $35.8m.
Italferr will provide consultancy services for preliminary design of the 1,061km railway after submitting the lowest bid of $32m for the contract.
DB International, a German engineering and consultancy firm, and the National Engineering Office, an independent Omani firm, had submitted bids of $42.8m and $57.8m, respectively.
Around 34 companies had collected the documents for the preliminary design tender, which was floated in February, and a dozen submitted technical offers when the bidding was opened in May.
Oman’s tender board extended the deadline for submission of bids for the project management consultancy contract to 26 August. Around 28 companies have collected the documents for that contract.
The award is Italferr’s third in recent months. It was also selected by the Saudi Railway Company for the preliminary and detailed design of the new 960km rail link from Riyadh to Jeddah, and it is developing the design of the Doha metro in Qatar.
