Region Stockholm has awarded Swiss contractor Implenia a $102m contract to build a connecting tunnel for its expanded metro depot in the Högdalen suburb in the south of the Swedish capital.

Implenia’s scope of work includes excavating a concrete tunnel, as well as a rock tunnel with 2km of track, and a 500m-long underground train parking area. It will equip the tunnels with electrical and telecoms wiring, as well as control systems, ventilation and sprinklers.

The work is taking place in a densely populated urban area and close to other railway tracks using blasting technology.

Christian Späth, Implenia’s head of civil engineering, said: “We are very proud of being chosen for this large, complex and multidisciplinary infrastructure project, fully in line with our strategy.

“We are looking forward to a fruitful collaboration on the project and are glad to bring in our longstanding tunnelling expertise as well as our skills in project management and sustainability.”
