Californian contractor Granite has signed an $88m contract with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to expand a section of the Ortega Highway State Route 74 near to Lake Elsinore.
Granite will widen the SR-74’s shoulders and roadway, installing rumble strips in the centre and along the edges. The expansion will increase vehicle buffer room, improving safety on the narrow, mountainous two-lane highway. Granite will also resurface the road.
Bill Moore, Granite’s vice president for regional operations, said: “We have been working closely with Caltrans on this highway for several years, and we are excited to continue this partnership.
“It aligns with our strategic goal of expanding our footprint in the Inland Empire of Southern California.”
Construction is due to begin in April and will be completed in November 2026.
