A joint venture between Austrian contractor firm Strabag and Germany’s Johann Bunte has won a €600m road-widening contract for Autobahn 1 in Lower Saxony.
A 30km stretch of road between the Lohne and Bramsche exits will be widened from two to three lanes in both direction. Work also includes the construction of 14 bridges and the rehabilitation of 18 others, as well as the installation of noise barriers.
Construction will be carried out over eight phases to minimise disruption. The first five will involve work in the direction of Osnabrück; the final three will be in the direction of Bremen.
Thomas Birtel, Strabag chief executive, said: "The widening of the motorway from four to six lanes will eliminate a bottleneck on the busy A1.
"We are pleased to be able to contribute our expertise as the market leader in German transportation infrastructure construction to this major project."
The project is due to be completed in mid-2025.
