UK architect Foster + Partners has unveiled its masterplan for Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach on Bahrain’s southwest coast.
The mixed-use district has two hotels and branded residencies at either end of the 3.5km-long site, with smaller hotels at 500m intervals and residential communities between them.
A public surf park will be the masterplan’s centrepiece, complete with wave-generating machines.
The masterplan is organised around three primary areas that are linked by tree-lined boulevards. These are Beach Drive, which spans the full length of the site, and is lined with shops, restaurants and cafes. The Main Boulevard runs parallel to it, but further inland, and Bilaj Al Jazayer Avenue connects the two.
The design is inspired by Miami’s low-rise art deco structures and Bahrain’s tradition of shaded green courtyards and alleyways, which offer shade and natural ventilation.
Gerard Evenden, Foster + Partners’ head of studio, said: “We are creating a green and walkable community that offers a range of crafted experiences for residents and visitors.
“The permeable development has tree-lined streets, shaded courtyards and a spectacular public park that directly connects with the waterfront. Needless to say, the west-facing district will also offer some of the best sunset views in Bahrain.”
