UK consultant Mace has been awarded a delivery partner role on the King Salman International Airport project in Riyadh. When complete in 2030, it will cover 57 sq km and have a capacity of 100 million passengers a year.
Mace will offer project and programme management services, as well as advice on planning, construction management, cost management, procurement, logistics, sustainability and health and safety.
Foster + Partners won the design of the airport in 2022 and has just been selected to prepare its masterplan, which includes 12 sq km of residential and recreational facilities, shops and transport links.
Foster + Partners’ surrounding urban area will be linked by the Wadi Loop, a green infrastructure corridor close to a seasonal river. It will work with American engineer Jacobs on the concept masterplan, detailed masterplan and the design of certain assets.
Luke Fox, Foster + Partners’ head of studio, said: “We are delighted to begin working on the next stage of the new King Salman International Airport – a truly innovative approach to airport design that reinvents the passenger experience at every level and creates a unique airport metropolis that is steeped in Riyadh’s culture.”
The airport will serve as a hub for visitors travelling to Riyadh Expo 2030 and FIFA World Cup 2034.
