A mixed-use project in downtown Dublin shut down temporarily yesterday after tests confirmed at least 20 cases of Covid-19.
Ireland’s acting chief medical officer Dr Ronan Glynn said it was the "first significant cluster on a construction site to date", reports The Irish Times.
Contractor John Paul Construction said comprehensive testing was carried out after one staff member was found to have contracted Covid.
The site is understood to be a hotel and apartment complex on Townsend Street, the Times said.
Glynn revealed the cluster on Monday evening at a public briefing to urge construction companies to examine Covid safety protocols.
In a statement, John Paul Construction said: "Following confirmation that a staff member on one of our construction sites in Dublin had tested positive for Covid-19, comprehensive testing has identified a number of additional positive cases.
"We have followed the specific advice of the HSE and the Health and Safety Authority at all times in relation to this matter and are assisting the HSE in arranging further tests as required. We have temporarily closed the site as advised by the HSE."
