UK contractor Kier has won a new contract to carry out engineering and construction works on the country’s 200-year-old canal network.Â
The six-year contract with the Canal & River Trust will deliver around $41m of construction works each year, ensuring waterways are safe and enjoyable, the trust said.Â
Every year the ageing network requires approximately 100 major construction projects and over 200 minor repair projects. Â
The contract will initially run for six years, with options to extend to a maximum of 10 years. It replaces an existing contract held for over five years by Kier.Â
"This contract is the result of 18 months of hard work, care and attention reviewing how we manage projects of this type and looking at how we can improve things," said Vince Moran, operations director for the Canal & River Trust.Â
Kier is the fourth-largest UK construction contractor behind Balfour Beatty, Carillion and Laing O’Rourke.
