Ferrovial wins €288m deal to expand Portuguese metro

Spanish contractor Ferrovial Construction and Portuguese construction firm Alberto Couto Alves have been awarded a $288m contract to extend the metro system of Porto, Portugal’s second largest city.

The consortium will extend the metro’s yellow line by 3.5km and build a 3.1km circular pink line.

The yellow line will run down 3.2km from Santo Olvido station in southern Porto, to the neighbourhoods of Vila Nova de Gaia, Mafamude e Vilar do Paraiso, Oliveira do Douro and Vilar do Andorinho.

Work on the project includes the construction of three stations, a 770m tunnel and a viaduct.

The pink line with cover the Praça da Liberdade, the city’s main square, and will add four stations to the system.

Work on both schemes is due to begin this year, with the yellow line due to be completed in 34 months and the pink line in 42 months.
