Poland’s largest utility has arranged funding for its Baltica 2 offshore wind farm. Together with Baltica 3, it will be able to generate as much as 1.5GW, making them the largest installations of their type in Europe.

Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) will receive €400m from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to carry out the work. It will now develop the scheme in conjunction with Danish wind company Ørsted.

Altogether, €1.4bn will be lent by the EIB to support PGE and Ørsted in building the two wind farms.

Baltica 2 is due to be completed in 2027 and will contain 107 turbines located 40km north of Poland’s Baltic shore. Baltica 3 will have a 1GW capacity and its due to become operational in 2030.

The €1.4bn is underpinned by funding from InvestEU, REPowerEU and the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

Teresa Czerwińska, the vice president of the EIB, said: “Baltica 2 will increase the share of renewables in Poland’s energy mix and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“It will strengthen Poland’s energy security and support economic competitiveness by harnessing innovative technologies. I thank all partners involved and keep my fingers crossed for a swift and successful completion of this high-impact project.”
