US developer CIM has confirmed that its high rise under construction in Atlanta, Georgia was the scene of a fatality last week, as police released more details of the incident in which a 20-year-old construction worker appeared to have fallen from the 19th floor of the building.
A CIM spokesperson confirmed that the incident occurred at residential development called “The Mitchell” on Mitchell Street SW, part of CIM’s Centennial Yards scheme.
CIM broke ground on the 19-floor, 304-unit apartment building in November 2022. It’s scheduled for completion this year.
“CIM Group is aware of the fatal accident that occurred at one of the development sites in downtown Atlanta within the boundaries of Centennial Yards,” the company said in a statement.
“Our heartfelt condolences are with all those who are affected and everyone on-site fully cooperated with the appropriate authorities as they evaluated this tragic incident.”
Atlanta police said they responded to a report of an unresponsive male at 327 Mitchell Street SW at 10.36am on Thursday, 20 March. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
In an updated incident report, police said the man, identified as Lauinier Bonilla, worked for a subcontractor at the site.
The report said that, on arrival, a fire officer stated that Bonilla had been working on the 19th floor.
Bonilla was not wearing a harness. Police found a hard hat and safety glasses near his body.
The report said police were advised of camera footage that captured the incident taking place, and that a man paying to park across the street had witnessed Bonilla falling.
Police said the preliminary investigation indicated no signs of foul play.
