CPB Contractors is celebrating a milestone in its project to build Stage 1 of Sydney’s Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) with the completion of a triple-lane road tunnel between Rozelle and Birchgrove.
It began tunnelling in a joint venture for Transport for NSW in mid-2021.
Since then, crews have excavated nearly 8.5km of tunnels in total, including a 2.6km network of cross passages, temporary tunnels, ventilation caverns, and substations.
The work involved excavating a million bank cubic metres of spoil to create tunnel crossings above Rozelle Interchange and Sydney Metro West without disruptions.
The JV built two underground ventilation caverns 19m wide, 42m long, and 25m high, and installed 105,000 rock bolts ranging from 1.2 metres to 9.0 metres in length.
“I am incredibly proud of our crew’s outstanding work and technical excellence,” said project director Sam Diamond.
Stage 1 of the WHT project involves excavating and lining the Western Harbour Tunnel, including ventilation tunnels and substations between Rozelle Interchange and Cove St, Birchgrove.
