Ground has been broken on a $3.7bn hospital extension at UC Davis Health in Sacramento, California.
The 14-storey, 70m-high building was designed by SmithGroup and is being built by McCarthy Building. When complete in 2030, the “California Tower” will have 334 private rooms, two helipads and a range of state-of-the-art medical technology.
The tower, which will be connected to UC Davis’ surgery and emergency services pavilion, will increase the hospital’s gross floor area by 85,000 sq m.
Bryan Anderson, McCarthy’s vice president of operations, said: “We proactively developed a comprehensive staffing rotation strategy from the project’s inception, ensuring team well-being and continual growth.
“With such a big team working on a large healthcare project, culture is very important."
