The western Brazilian state of Bahia has launched a public-private partnership tender for a light rail scheme in the coastal city of Salvador.
The project involves building an 18.5km-long system and running it for a 30-year concession period. The Bahia Ministry of Urban Development has specified that the line should have a maximum speed of 70km/h, and expects about 93,000 people to use it each day.

The total investment for the project is estimated to reach around $470m. The term of the contract will extend for 30 years.
About 14km of the line will use an existing rail system, refurbished and changed to standard gauge.
Altogether, the line will have 20 trains to give a service interval of 10 minutes at its 21 stations.
The deadline for submission of proposals is 30 June. Construction will begin within 90 days of contract signing and the project is due to be completed about 36 months after that.
