China has given China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) the contract to build seven sport facilities in the Solomon Islands for the 2023 Pacific Games.
The facilities including a new national stadium and an aquatic centre are being funded by China after the government of the Solomon Islands switched recognition from Taiwan to China in 2019.
CCECC will also build a six-court tennis centre, a full-sized training track and field with football and rugby pitch, a multi-purpose hall and an office building, reports local newspaper The Island Sun.Â
Work is scheduled to begin in May, with the facilities due to be handed over on 31 May 2023
China’s ambassador to the Solomon Islands, Li Ming (pictured above), announced CCECC’s appointment at a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office in Honiara on 24 March.

The prime minister said the government, through the National Hosting Authority, would do all it could to expedite construction.
CCECC’s engineers were expected to arrive on 11 April.
